Touch Yourself, Trust Yourself is a cancer education program for high school aged young adults. It's a video resource for teachers/facilitators to communicate essential messages about cancer and young adults to their group.
The program fits into a typical 50 minute class period and talks about the importance of self-exams as well as the unique issues faced by young adults with cancer.
The two most common types of cancer in young adults are testicular and breast cancer. They also happen to be the two types of cancer that have higher survival rates if detected and treated early.
The goal of the Touch Yourself, Trust Yourself program is to increase the percentage of young adults doing regular self-exams. We will realize this goal by educating students about the importance and benefit of breast and testicular self-exams. This will lead to earlier detection of cancer in young adults and improved survival rates.
Here are some powerful statistics from our school pilot of the program:
Many people wonder why we chose such a 'risky' title... well, we wanted to use 'shock-value' in order to reach young adults. Self-exams save lives. They are very important. All stakeholders agree that this kind of program is essential for our youth, however there is a 'gap' when it comes to communicating this message and we feel we are well-suited to fill it.
With such a 'risky' title we will get the young adults' attention in a way that many educational programs do not.
But don't focus on the 'Touch Yourself' part of the title... the 'Trust Yourself' part is just as important... we want young adults to feel confident and empowered to take responsibility of their own health.
